Oh, The Heat!

Oh the heat has been just miserable! I can't even take the boys out to play because it's just too darn hot outside! It's like as soon as you step outside you can feel your energy being zapped right out of your body. I was so tired last night that I couldn't read or anything and ashamed to say I left the dinner dishes to be done this morning, and the other chores yesterday were neglected as well. We were just SO exhausted after the movies, the store, and our usual Thursday errands which unfortunately couldn't be avoided despite the heat. Even my energetic little boys wanted to just sit on the couch, watch cartoons, and read books until bedtime.
Here's something to give you an idea of the heat in our area (and I know some others have it worse, but for us in this area we've known no worse this early in the summer. lol)
From our local newspaper::
"On top of seeing the longest period of consecutive days without measurable rain in June at 24 days, as of Thursday, the area saw a heat record for June 28 at 104 degrees
The average high is 85.
It also set the record for the hottest day in June, beating 102 degrees back in 1988, Nield said.
And he added there’s “no relief in sight,” with a high of 100 today and in the upper 90s next week with very little chance of rain."

I am hoping for rain very VERY soon to cool things off. There was a poor little cat laying on the side of our building last night just dehydrated. I have seen the cat ever since we moved in, and I took it some water and piece of leftover chicken. It drank half a cool whipped bowl of water which told me it was indeed dehydrated. Poor little kitty. It was gone this morning though and the bowl was almost empty so I'm hoping it got to rest and re-hydrate.

 We did get out and go watch the movie Disney's Brave yesterday. Something we could do that still kept us cool. Lucas had a play date with a friend from preschool so we all went to see that movie for her belated birthday.
It was a pretty good movie for both boys and girls to enjoy. The triplets in this movie just had Lucas laughing time and again and he was SO well behaved during the movie! He sat through it all aside from the potty breaks and actually paid attention to the whole movie. He did so well in fact that we are going to start taking him to the movies on a regular basis.
Levi on the other hand (whom is only 1 1/2) was super good the first 30 minutes into the movie until he decided he had just had enough. Me and Hubby had to take turns leaving the movie theater to take him and walk him around in the lobby because tantrums were never-ending. We are going to try again on July 4th since our local movie theater is hosting a FREE movie of Happy Feet 2. Maybe since it has a lot of singing and dancing he will also be intrigued. LOL

We picked out our new apartment yesterday after looking at 5 of them we found the PERFECT one for us.

 The ONLY downfall was the fact that the air conditioning unit was a bit dated, but as long as it does the job I can live with it. I'm not too picky and an A/C unit is just a seasonal thing. I'm thankful to have one at all because a lot of people do not and in this heat our town has set up some relief centers with A/C and bottled water. Besides the apartment had all the other perks we were looking for from the carpet color, tile color, bathroom style, cabinets, layout, closets, etc so there really is no complaining. I'm thankful we finally found a place and now I CANNOT wait to get all moved in. I feel like a little kid at Christmas. haha.

We are going to be going through stuff over the next few weeks and then it will be time to start packing. We went through the boys books the other day and eliminated 3 boxes and 3 totes filled with books. They still have an entire bookshelf filled with books, but we will be donating the books we are getting rid of to a church for other children to enjoy. This week we are tackling the toys and clothes.
Anyway I have literally an entire house-full of chores awaiting to be done so I better get started on them.
Have a wonderful day, and a wonderful weekend! :)

Sincerely,
Tori

Flame of Resistance Book Review

  • Paperback: 416 pages
  • Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers (May 18, 2012)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1414359470
  • ISBN-13: 978-1414359472

::Taken from the back of the book::
Years of Nazi occupation have stolen much from Brigitte Durand. Family. Freedom. Hope for a future, especially for a woman with a past like hers. But that changes the day American fighter pilot Tom Jaeger is shot down over occupied France. Picked up by the Resistance, Tom becomes the linchpin in their plan to infiltrate a Germans-only brothel and get critical intel out through Brigitte, a prostitute rumored to be sympathetic to the Allied cause.

D-day looms and everyone knows that invasion is imminent. But so is treachery, and the life of one American pilot unexpectedly jeopardizes everything. He becomes more important than the mission to a man who cannot bear to lose another agent and to a woman who is more than just a prostitute, who finally realizes that her actions could change the course of history.

::My Thoughts::
I couldn't wait to read this book due to the description, but I have to admit some parts were a little slow for me. I just couldn't really get into it as deeply as I would have liked. I'm not going to give this book a bad review, however, because the book itself wasn't bad at all. I think just from my personal preferences it just didn't suit me as well as I would have expected due to lagging parts throughout the novel.
Brigitte's point of views were always interesting and often moving, but when it came to Tom's parts I was almost always lost. Mainly because I had to take time from the book to look up descriptions of planes they used back then during the war to get more of a clear picture of his thoughts. Mainly "he" refers to planes or pictures them, he even plans things out in ways to where you can't possibly understand unless you picture to air crafts mentioned. So that's why it took me way longer than usual to make my way through this book. I still enjoyed Tom's character, but Brigitte was by far my favorite. In a world where people starved, were tortured, and whom were left with very little options for survival she battled with questions of faith, and yet kept her strength and courage. She is an admirable character who has a wonderful heart, and you can't help but love her character. Tom was equally innocent and yet clueless which made him sort of charming in a way, but he too showed heart at various times through the story.
I like the history of the book, and I will say that besides the fact it is well written, it is also very well researched. I would recommend doing a little digging on the history of WWII before reading this novel as the novel is set in France during WWII, but all in all it's an enjoyable read.
In my personal opinion ages 20-up would get the most understanding out of it, but the Christian message is clear throughout the entire novel which is highly refreshing since we are dealing with the story of WWII, prostitutes, and the various unfortunate things that occurred during the occupation.

If life deals you lemons...

Make some sweet lemonade! LOL

I know I missed Happy Homemaker yesterday. I am however looking forward to this upcoming weeks. We had some unexpected appointments come up, and things have just not been as planned lately.
Remember when I said we were going to look for a house because I didn't want an apartment?
Well, that was all great and dandy but then we seen the housing market in our area up close and personal and let's just say it stinks right now. More than stinks really, we only found two houses that we liked.

One house was a beautiful 2 story, 4 bedroom house, finished basement, and fenced in pool area! It was gorgeous and needed some updating and new carpet but was in our price range and sat on a cul-de-sac. We looked at the pictures online and loved it and were waiting on the real estate agent to call us back so we could take a tour in person. She called back...to say that an offer had been placed on the house and the owners had accepted. House no longer on the market...

The second house we also found online, but there were only pictures available of the outside of the home. It was a cute little 3 bedroom in our price range with a yard and playset in the back which came with the house. It had a half finished basement and description said: "Very little work needed, ready to move in" So we called and set up a tour of the house with the owner himself.
The house was a joke. I am really sorry to say that, but nobody was living in it. There were holes in the walls and towels were shoved in the holes, no trim on the floor where more towels were shoved in them, the house had no been cleaned, and the tub was rusted completely, pieces of wood flooring were actually missing in the living room, and it was just unlivable!

The real estate agent dropped us off a list of houses she had found (all out of our price range with less than 30% of the items on our wish list), and we faced facts...We are not going to find a house anytime soon on our budget.

So...it will be an apartment for the next year. BUT the good news is that we did find an apartment. It's not super big or anything, but it's charming and it feels homey. We will be downsizing a bit more but that also means less to clean so it's not a total downer. LOL. Plus it has a playground for the kids which is a HUGE plus for us. They are more than excited. Right now our apartment complex only has yard space, there is no playground equipment and there is always dog doo-doo to worry about since they don't exactly keep up with picking up out here sad to say. So I am satisfied, and everything will work out. God will take care of us, and even things didn't go the way we wanted them to things did still manage to work out. I'm just thankful we have somewhere to go and that we have a roof over our heads. I'm very grateful for our blessings.
Our town is so full right now that all the apartment complexes are either full or ridiculously priced, and all the available houses are not what we are looking for. All the rental houses are ridiculously priced for our town as well. Can you imagine paying $1,200 a month for a 3 bedroom house (small bedrooms at that) with little yard space that sits right across from a sorority house plus having to pay all your utilities and provide all your own appliances? Add to the fact that the only space for a dining room table in the house is in your living room since the kitchen is a walk-in? I surely can't. Some areas I can see it. Location, location, but not in my town where very little goes on and there's not much to do here besides movies, bowling, and a mall that has very few shops, and a Walmart that has a Subway in it. :)

So yesterday was filled with appointments and I just did not have the time to get around to Happy Homemaker Monday, but now you know what's been going on in my world. Happy Homemaker Monday will for sure be back this coming Monday, and I can't wait to be back with it. It's a weight off my shoulders to have everything settled since we're moving in just a month and a half. I'm a planner and now I can make my moving lists, plans, etc. LOL What have you been up to lately?

Sincerely,
~Tori~

The Monster Mix-Up Book Review

  • Paperback: 42 pages
  • Publisher: Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc. (February 2004)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0805961259
  • ISBN-13: 978-0805961256

::Book Description::
This is a fun book for both parents and children alike. Written from her own experiences with her two sons the author takes us on a tale that we can all relate to, and find humor in.
Stephen and Kevin are two boys with a wild imagination. As night-time falls the boys begin to imagine a scary monster that lives down the hall just waiting for them to fall asleep so it can get them. But the boys are determined to catch that monster. Mom comes in and puts an end to their fun, but not before Stephen and Kevin decide to set some traps to catch that scary beast! Among these traps are some string to trip the monster and squirt guns filled with ice cold water so they can freeze the beast alive!
What happens next is something that is sure to surprise both parents and children alike, and has a good lesson each of us can walk away with.

::My Thoughts::
This book is a fun read, especially for young boys who have an overactive imagination when darkness falls. Although I would say that girls would enjoy this book to. As a parent I certainly enjoyed this book, and my oldest son who is only 4 enjoyed it as well. We couldn't stop laughing, and the book keeps readers intrigued from cover to back. The story rhymes which seems to keep children even more interested, and makes the book that much more fun to read. There were no lags in the story, and the illustrations were colorful and original.
This book is definitely going on the favorites shelf in my children's room, and it's something they will always be able to relate to. Let's face it even though we know there's no monsters in the dark our children's imaginations will run wild. This book is a perfect lesson they can learn while having a good laugh at both children and parents alike.
If I had to recommend an age group for this book I would say ages 4-11. There are plenty of colorful pictures for the younger children, and the fact that the story is about children catching a monster is sure to keep them riveted!

I rated this book 5 stars on Goodreads

To give you an update...

Happy Homemaker Mondays are currently on hold. We have had doctor appointments the last few Mondays in a row, and this Monday will be no exception. Monday's have been a bit manic lately and it's been difficult to get the posts up. However, if I get back home in time I may still post this weeks. We will just have to see. I just wanted to let you all know that if I do get it posted this week it won't be my usual A.M. time it would be much later in the day. But still feel free to drop me your blog link for Happy Homemaker Monday in a comment somewhere if you participate, I will still visit your post. :)

Come on in and have a quick chat, and make yourself comfy. I have a nice cold glass of sweet iced tea that is exceptional. Today cold drinks are a must whether it be tea, lemonade, or just a refreshing glass of nice ice cold water (which I will get after I finish this tea).
As you know we had a bit of trouble searching for that "right" apartment complex. And as you all know we wanted an apartment because it is a lot less maintenance and well....that's what we said we wanted. BUT even though the apartment we got is perfect on the inside, it lacks the outdoor space we want. So, after much discussion between me and hubby we are ready to move back into a house. There's no time like the present right?
I miss the boys having their OWN yard to play in. I miss having a garden and playing in sprinklers with the boys. I miss grilling out whenever I want just right outside my back door rather than going to some special barbecue area. Those are little pleasantries you don't get to do while living apartment life, and the boys need a house. I want them to have a yard to play in, etc.
So now we're on a new journey. We are going to be searching for that perfect home that fits us. I think we are finally ready to embark on buying a house. For the time being we are still moving into a house, but it won't be one we are buying. We have some searching to do, and this time around we want to make sure the house is a good fit for us before we jump into something. It's easy to get so eager that you just want to take the first thing that comes along, but this time we have a list. We want at least 75% of what's on our wish list (now I sound like HGTV) haha. I know that you don't always get everything you want with a house, but I think to want 75% of our wish list is reasonable. It will take some looking, but we are more than ready. I want to lay down roots. I want to etch onto a door the boys height as they grow (and they are growing so fast!), I want a garden of my own making, me and hubby want to build the boys a fort type playhouse in the yard, and I want them to have the space and freedom of a yard because a yard is the door to a wonderful imagination.

But anyway that's what's going on with me. I have some book reviews I will be posting this week, and a lot of reading to catch up on. I am also picking back up the bible reading plan. It's actually to read the entire bible in a year, but I'm not going to set a time limit for myself. I want to enjoy the bible, and not feel rushed. Plus I always tend to get behind and then just end up giving up, and I don't want to repeat that. It can be a bit overwhelming, but I want to learn from the bible and take my time reading God's words and studying them. I hope things are great with you all, and thank you much for taking the time to read this. I hope we had a good visit. I am looking for more great blogs to read so if you have one feel free to leave your link. And I'm also re-connecting on Twitter so if you want to connect on there my twitter name is @mommywonderland

I hope you all have a fantastic day!

Sincerely,
Tori

Never take anything for granted...

Sorry I have been M.I.A. lately. There has been a lot going on. To be honest I am not at all sure that I'm ready to talk about it just yet. It's just some health issues that have been going on in our family, and we are all just sticking together the best we can. More importantly we are sticking close to God because when it all comes down to it's all in His hands.
I will talk about it eventually, but right now nothing is even for certain whether it be good or bad. We have a 99% hope and assurance that things are good, but there's that niggling 1% possibility that is just to fresh to talk about. So until we get further details I want to keep things to ourselves. I really hope this doesn't offend anyone, but it's not even something I'm talking about in my written journal. Right now we are just hoping and praying, and if you would like to keep us in your prayers I would gladly appreciate it.

Anyway due to all that we are going through I realized how much I have taken life in general for granted. We sometimes get so used to our lives that we begin to un-appreciate it. I have taken for granted God, my husband, my children, my family. I love my children more than life, they are my whole world. I love God, without him nothing would be possible. I love my husband, whom is my soul mate and best friend. I love my family, who even despite our differences at times has stuck by me no matter what. And yet...I never before realized how TRULY lucky I am to have all of them. And sometimes something in life happens that changes your whole world and you wake up every day just praying and thanking God for all the loved ones you have around you. Because our loved ones are what makes this world a perfect place no matter what. Not material items, but our loved ones because those are our true blessings.
So tonight if you could do me a favor: hug your children, husband, family, or give them a call, or even write them a letter...Tell them you love them very much and they mean the world to you. Tell them how much you are proud of them and appreciate them.
And then have a private conversation with God and thank Him for blessing you, and how much you appreciate Him.
One thing I have learned is that we must ALWAYS hold close to our faith, and if we thank God for our many blessings every day then we will appreciate them more. Because life becomes so same sometimes and we allow ourselves to become so overwhelmed by the things going on around us that it is very easy to forget.

Sincerely,
Tori

Happy Homemaker Monday #9

~Happy Homemaker Monday~

::The weather in my part of the world::
Hasn't been too bad, but we had a really cold day last Friday. It was rainy and chilly all day. Indiana weather though is always unpredictable so you never know what your going to get here. I can't wait until the warmer nights. The plus side in all the cooler nights is LESS mosquitoes though so I guess there's always a silver lining.

::On my reading pile::
Flame of Resistance by: Tracy Groot
The Fault in our Stars by: John Green (I am determined to have this book read this week!)
some other great books are on my TBR pile, most of them for review, and a couple Harlequin Historical books I picked up at the library.

::On my TV::
Not really watching too much lately on TV. Planning on finding some new TV series to get into. If you have any suggestions let me know and I will check into them. Other than that I'll probably just catch the news and watch whatever hubby and the kids are watching.

::On the menu for this week’s dinner::
Monday- baked half ham, mashed potatoes, corn
Tuesday- breaded fried chicken, mac & cheese, peas
Wednesday- hot dogs, baked beans, applesauce
Thursday- shopping day
Friday-
Saturday-
Sunday-

::Recipe I tried or want to try soon::

::Looking around the home::
It's 6:30am, everyone is asleep. It's my job to wake everyone up so we can get ready for Lucas's doctor's appointment. We have to go to see if his hydroniphrosus has made a come-back. He has to have a series of tests run on him. I'm praying it isn't back though. I dread for him to have to go through the tests because it will be painful, and if I could take his place I would in a heartbeat, but we have to know so he can quit taking his antibiotics, and we can get down to the bottom of why he's had a series of illnesses. The children's hospital is about an hour and a half drive from here and since we will inevitably be caught in rush hour traffic AND have an inevitably large amount of paperwork to fill out I want to get there in plenty enough time.
Library books are in the library bag waiting to be returned to the library upon our return. More than likely I will just be running in since Lucas won't feel at all good. We'll just have to see how things go.
I have a warm cup of tea sitting beside me that I've only taken a few sips from, my nerves are a jumble and the last thing I want right now is coffee to further jump start my nerves.
Laundry is folded in the laundry basket waiting to be put away. I ran out of energy and I'll get to it when we get back home.
I have a stack of blank discs sitting next to me that I need to burn pictures too. Hubby only temporarily fixed my laptop, but it could still crash at any time, and I do NOT want to lose any photos.

::What I have been up to lately::
I have been going through old clothes, with two growing boys there are always clothes they are growing out of or into. It's time to purge them though. Same with me and hubby. We have held onto clothes for years in the hopes that we will fit back into them one day soon. I am losing more and more weight lately, but the hopes of fitting back into pre-pregnancy clothes are slim. My body has changed in so many ways and it's just time to get rid of them. Even if I do eventually get back to my old size the chances of those old clothes fitting me right in all the needed places are very slim.
We all signed up for the summer reading program offered by our library. You simply log in online and track your reading hours. There are weekly prize drawings and a grand prize at the end of the program. It's a nice way to get people reading, and I think everyone who signs up gets a t-shirt. We all read regularly anyway so it's just an added little bonus, and the boys have upped story time from twice daily to three and sometimes four times daily. Lucas (whom is 4) has even been looking at picture books and making up stories to go along with them. He does great with the picture books with the word underneath, and we are working on more beginner books. I am just so excited our family loves books! Growing up I was the only one that liked to read in my family. LOL
I've been making some lists for our upcoming move. I am so excited to be in a new apartment community, our current one is going downhill fast, and we have had a lot of young college students move in that LOVE to be up all night and party. Namely the ones above us. In a way I understand where they are coming from, they ARE college students and isn't that what college students do. They want to unwind and have fun right? But then in a way I really wish that they would have courtesy to those of us that live out here with children. The loud music, people in and out at all hours, etc., is just really stressful. The new apartment complex we are moving doesn't tolerate parties and such which is what we were looking for. I probably sound like a party pooper, but hello....2 small children here who have bedtimes, I kinda have to be. I know this could all be solved with getting a house, and I want one so badly! Hubby says it just isn't the right time for us to be buying a house right now. Finances have been a bit rough lately so we'll just have to see where we end up the next couple of years I guess.

::On my to-do list::

  • Make this week's meal plan
  • Mop the kitchen and bathroom floors
  • Scrub the tub and sinks
  • Purge more toys I've come across that the boys have outgrown
  • Go through clothes I've had packed away in bins that won't fit us anymore
  • Put laundry away
  • Back-up pics I have saved on the laptop

::Blog of the week::
I found her blog through Pinterest. She has some amazing Children's Book Activies! We are big on reading in our home and these ideas are fabulous! I guess I never really thought of all the activies you can do with children's books, but from now on it will be at least a weekly ritual in our house. Hmm...perhaps I could even add it to the blog every week...
Here's one of her pics:
http://www.momto2poshlildivas.com/2012/05/childrens-book-week-share-your-favorite.html

::My projects::
I haven't made it to the hobby store to get beads for my sun-catchers just yet. It has been such a hectic week, and my car is currently not running. Hubby is hoping to have it fixed next week, and I can't wait. Even though I rarely go anywhere just the fact of knowing that my car is out of commission and I am stuck at home really aggravates me, and this is an exceptionally long work week for hubby. He works every single day except today. 14 hours. :(

::From the camera::
Call me childish, but as a kid I use to always want to see the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile! lol. I was just fascinated by it as a child and the commercials, and on a trip to the dollar store this week it was sitting outside selling hot dogs for charity! I used my cell phone to capture a pic since I didn't have my camera on me. (Why I never remember to take it I will never know)
Here it is:

I couldn't get a pic of the inside, but the dash boards are hotdogs on a bun as well! LOL
Here's one of the commercials with the jingle. I use to sing this as a kid because it was oddly catchy to me. :)

Organization tip- I organize my containers just like this because in an apartment we are SO limited on cabinet space this makes things so much easier! And it also makes containers easier for the husband to find. haha. Now this pic I found on Pinterest, but it's still a fantastic idea and one I've been using for years.

::Bible Verse/Devotional::
Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understand, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
